Guy Carleton, 1st Baron of Dorchester, was soldier and administrator, twice holding the post of Governor of Quebec. He commanded British troops in the American War of Independence, leading the defence of Quebec in 1775 and  the 1776 counter-offensive that drove the rebels from the province. After the war he was appointed to the post of Governor-In-Chief.

His younger brother, Thomas Carleton, was appointed the first Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick, holding the position until his death in 1817, although he left Canada in 1803 and for the last 14 years administered the province from England.

The Carleton name lives on in Fredericton, in Carleton Park and Carleton Street, which coincidentally is the location of another of Fredericton’s historic buildings, 120 Carleton Street, which was built as an electrical generation facility in 1887.
